This manual was developed to assist immigrant survivors, advocates, and attorneys and was published in 2004. In many cases, the legal information has changed significantly and we encourage you to review our new manual “Empowering Survivors: Legal Rights of Immigrant Victims of Sexual Assault” which was published in 2010 and other tools available in the web library. The chapters offered here are those that may include useful information not available in the updated Sexual Assault Manual.
Collection Empowering Survivors: Legal Rights of Immigrant Victims of Sexual Assault
This manual seeks to explain the complex topics of immigration, family, public benefits and criminal law that are intended to assist immigrant survivors of sexual assault. The goal of this manual is to provide support and assistance to advocates and attorneys, arming them with the knowledge they need to confidently provide effective assistance to immigrant sexual assault victims and the immigrant community. Additionally, this text is being written to provide immigrant advocates, immigrant attorneys, and social service providers to immigrant communities with an understanding of general sexual assault dynamics and how these affect immigrant victims. These chapters and appendices may also be useful to advocates and attorneys working with immigrant victims of domestic violence, stalking, and human trafficking.

This monograph is designed to help Violence Against Women Act STOP Grant administrators expand services to projects that serve immigrant victims of family violence. Specifically, it will focus on factors administrators should examine to determine how effective a program will be in serving a targeted, immigrant population. It will provide guidelines to distinguish between programs that claim to be open to immigrants and those that have established true and trusting relationships with immigrant communities.
