1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (September 30, 1996)
- This Act often referred to as IIRAIRA contained reforms in immigration law that included changes to the Violence Against Women Act's Immigration protections. IIRAIRA created VAWA Cancellation of Removal, made battered immigrant self-petitioners eligible for federal public benefits as qualified immigrants, exempted most battered immigrants from deeming, created VAWA confidentiality and criminalized female genital mutilation in the United States.
